Welcome to 2012 Bushchlen Mowatt Visual Arts Scholarship program at Arts Umbrella. 2012 marks the 26th year that Bushchlen Mowatt Foundation has sponsored this program. I'll guide you throughout the course as a main instructor, and this year, Devon Knowles, Gwenessa Lam, Erica Stocking and Raymond Boisoly, will work with you as well to inspire and realise your project prorosals for the final exhibition. We ask you to be proactive to take a full advantage of this rare opportunity.
During the intensive 12-week course, we will be working on:
● Exploring creativity and skills development
● Investigating contemporary art making
● Portfolio preparation with one on one consultation
● Critical thinking and group critique in non-competitive environment
● Practice of making creative decisions, from a concept to realization
● Writing an artist statement
● Setting up an exhibition
12 weeks are divided into 3 parts for research, concept development, and prodcution period for the exhibition. The regular classes ends on May 6th, however, students are required to participate in setting up an exhibition till the end of May. It is artist’s responsibility to install the work of art to his/her intention. It’s never done until the work is shown to the audience.
If you have any concerns about any of these to start with, please feel free to talk to me during the class hours or through email.
Some important points to graduate this course successfully:
- Spend some time on your own outside of the class on research and project development. Homework will be assigned occasionally.
- Always notify me if you miss a class or can't do your homework.
- To be included in the exhibition, you must attend 80% of the class (10 out of 12) and complete the project within the time allotted.
- In May, you will have 1-2 Sundays after the final class, May 6 to complete your artwork if you haven't already done so. Also, you'll be in charge of installing your own work for the exhibition (Date TBA). So I hope you don't plan to be away!
